London Bridge is Falling Down

Swinford bridge which spans the Thames has been sold. I wonder if we could persuade the new owner to take it down and rebuild it near here. I am not sure people would pay the 5p toll but if their alternative routes across London are on fire (Blackwall tunnel) or effectively sunk (Woolwich Ferries), then the average Southeast to North London commuter may be willing to cough up.

Nothing makes me angrier living in Plumstead than the lack of avenues to cross the river. There is always something wrong with the Blackwall tunnel and to pay on the Dartford Crossing £1.50 each way is just too much. The other alternative means going into town or Rotherhite both of which are miles out of the way and also push traffic into Central London which I thought with the whole no pollution zone thing is what we were supposed to be avoiding.
Thamesmead is never that busy with traffic and the roads are wide enough and plenty enough to handle the extra traffic. They could make wahtever crossing it is a no lorry zone so that it is just commuters and cars/bikes using the area and still keep the majority of the lorries on the Dartford crossing. I have to travel across the river once or twice a week with work and it drives me insane. Getting the train is not an option as where I go is a business park and not near a train station...

Hi PM. Nothing to do with the river crossing (although in today's Greenwich Times some councillor was pushing home the same point about how the Blackwall tunnel escapades last week completely buggered up SE London) and too right he is!
But I don't know how to link the blogs that I read onto my blog..(v new to this)..I read yours and funnily enough the Greenwich Phantom all the time that I see you also read but I don't know how to put this on my blog so i can easily flick to them...thanks! PB
